5 Simple Steps to Feeling the Fear…And Doing It Anyway!

1. Feel It.

This can be the most difficult step. It’s natural to want to get past our fear and not feel any anxiety. In our attempts to overcome fear, we tend to sometimes ignore it or suppress it. In the long run, this doesn’t work. All our fears have a specific purpose, and the only way to uncover a fear’s purpose is to start by accepting it, by feeling the fear.

2. Express It.

Talk to someone about your fear. This can be a friend, teacher, or just someone you trust. You can also talk yourself through it. What’s going on? What specifically makes you feel afraid? Take the time to explore your emotions.

3. Appreciate It.

Again, your fear has a purpose: It’s a sign! Perhaps we’re not well prepared, and that’s why we’re fearful. The fear is giving us a signal to prepare. Perhaps we’ve prepared as much as possible, and the fear is telling us that we simply need to build our confidence around the issue. Believe in yourself and mentally rehearse: Close your eyes and imagine the best version of you. Do this often!

4. Use It.

Fear can make our body tremble. Fear can make our heart pound. Use the adrenaline rush to boost your energy, passion and determination. Breathe. Train yourself to welcome and manage your fear-like symptoms. It does get easier!

5. Take Action – Do It Anyway!

Often we think, ‘I’ll do it when I am not so afraid.’ But in reality, it works the other way around. The ‘doing it’ comes before the fear goes away. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it!
